Kenya’s hiphop first lady Nazizi Hirji topped the hiphopcharts on Reverbnation, an online website that aims to provide a central sitefor musicians, producers, and venues to collaborate and communicate.

Nazizi topped the hiphop charts for Nairobi. The charts arebased on a Band Equity Score. Band Equity Score encompasses hundreds of thingson the site. Stats like the artistes’ number of fans, songs played, visits etcare factored in, including promoter plays, percentage of emails opened by yourfans and shared widgets. These are all things that are not shown on the chartbut factor into your score.

Nazizi told Hot Secrets, “This is great. What I love aboutReverbnation is that they use your stats of plays and views to do the ranking.It is not make up,” adding, “I just checked my page after a long time and I washappy to see that I’m on top. This goes to show hat I still have support of thefans and that people are listening to my music online.”

Nazizi still remains one of the most popular and influentialartists in the East African region. She has topped charts with her hit singles like Kube, Jeshi, Forever,Tension and Kenyan Boy Kenyan Girl featuring Wyre.

Nazizi has also inspired a short film Rastar that is basedon a true story about her and which has been bought and aired by MNET. Thisyear, she will be launching her collaboration album with Jamaican star Gingah.

There is a new Afro funk Kenyan kid making waves in the US. KG Omulo is the name. Remember it.The singer and songwriter has a new album titled Ayah Ye! Moving Train, released last week.
"Growing up in Nairobi, which is very metropolitan, and having parents who let me listen to a little bit of everything — I'm talking eastern, western, all the legends that came out of Africa back in the day, mixed in with some Motown records — kind of blended it all in together," Omulo told All Things Considered host Guy Raz. "There was Bob Marley, too, and a little bit of the Beatles. It was a wide range of sound."
KG is said to have cut his teeth by performing in various American clubs.
“I can be conscious and get people stirred up instead of bringing them down,” Omulo told a US website. “I make positive music that educates without judging. I want to create awareness and still make people dance.”

This year Paa Ya Paa Art Centre will continue the BlackHistory month theme exhibition dubbed Walk Through Black History (WTBH). Thisis a PYP theme initiated two years ago, it featured paintings, pictures, books,memorabilia, and artifacts.

The guest performance for the February event is CharlotteHill O'Neal aka Mama C who is an internationally known visual artist, musicianand poet of more than two decades of experience. Born in Kansas City, Kansas,she is co-director of the United African Alliance Community Centre in Arusha.

There will also be a panel discussion featuring the new bookby Susan Wakhungu-Githuku, Life Journeys: Seeking Destiny. Before thepanel discussion, Footprints Press, the publishers of the book will lead awriter's workshop.

Born in 1951, in Kansas City, Kansas, Mama C became theyoungest member of the Kansas City School of Human Dignity at age 17.The next year, she joined the Kansas City Chapter of the Black Panther Partyand began working with Pete O’Neal, chapter founder and Chairman. Later thatyear, Pete and Charlotte were married at the Panther national headquarters inOakland, California.

Pete and Charlotte were forced to leave America in 1970after Pete was framed on firearms charges by the FBI COINTELPRO operation. Theytraveled to Algeria where they spent two years working with Eldridge andKathleen Cleaver to develop the International Black Panther Party.

In 1972 they relocated to Tanzania, where they began farmingusing traditional and sustainable methods. In 1991 Pete and Charlotte foundedthe United African American Community Center (UAACC). The name was later changedto the United African Alliance Community Center. UAACC is a non-profitcommunity based organization devoted to developing programs to support theArusha community, and to promote cultural ties to communities in America,emphasizing African American communities.

Emmy, famed for the hit Taunet Nelel was presented with theOverall Best Female African Artist 2011 for the London based Africa GospelMusic Awards.

On her first official visit to Africa, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador and iconic face of fashion, Gisele Bündchen, went to the grassroots level in Kenya to experience the reality of energy poverty and to see how Kenyans are transforming their lives by accessing sustainable energy.

“Energy affects everything. Children can study at night when they have access to electricity. If we can bring electricity to everyone, we can help people to survive,” she told a press conference at the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi.“It’s unjust if people do not have access to electricity.

Energy for all is achievable. Just 2% of global investment is needed,” she added, speaking a week before the global launch of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All (IYSEA).Ms. Bündchen’s visit to Kenya took her to Kibera, East Africa’s largest slum, to look at biogas centers (turning human waste into power), to Kisumu, in western Kenya, where she took part in collecting firewood and learned about fuel-efficient cook stoves and to the Mount Kenya area where micro-hydro power is bringing electricity to over 2,000 households.

While gains have been made in accessing electricity in the past two decades, huge gaps still remain. One in every five people on the planet do not have access to electricity. In Sub-Saharan Africa some 70 percent of the population have no electricity, while in Kenya only 18 percent of households have power.

Access to adequate fuels for cooking is also a major challenge, with many families still dependent on wood which produces toxic smoke, impacting the health of women and children. Around half the world’s population cook on open indoor fires and each year over 2.5 million people die prematurely as a result of breathing in emissions from these cook stoves, primarily from a substance called black carbon, also known as soot.Many more are blighted by ill health, such as chronic bronchitis.

Meanwhile, black carbon is emerging as an important climate change pollutant and is also implicated in crop damage.“We don’t hear about this and yet the solutions are so simple,” added Ms. Bündchen, who has recently been named the ‘world’s greenest celebrity’.

“When we come out of our bubbles and travel, you experience what I did in Kenya and it’s amazing how we can change our viewpoints You ask what can we do in our daily lives to make change. Everybody can help in a different way,” she said.“She speaks for the issues and she speaks from the heart. We were lucky to get her as a Goodwill Ambassador. It’s important to go out and meet people, which is part of making someone a great ambassador who can in turn communicate to millions of people that, for example, sustainable energy for all is possible—that it is one powerful way of motivating and catalyzing positive change in the run-up to Rio+20 in June this year,” said UN Under Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

“We need to change our way of thinking and not think globally but locally. In Africa two thirds of the population still do not have access to energy. There are solutions at the local and community levels. I have a dream that with photovoltaic energy we can build grids up from the bottom and that one day we will see rural areas generating electricity and selling energy to the cities,” he added.

Kenya is increasingly developing its geothermal, wind, solar and hydro power resources at the local level.UNEP has worked to realize and to accelerate the use of renewable energies within the overall theme of a Green Economy, with a special emphasis on Africa, and Kenya in particular.

The UN’s new office facility in Nairobi, which Ms. Bündchen visited and which houses UNEP and UN-HABITAT, has 6,000 square meters of solar panels and generates as much electricity as its 1,200 occupants consume.Ms. Bündchen’s visit, which was organized by Practical Action in partnership with UNEP, was designed to raise the profile of the IYSEA and highlight the importance of energy access globally.

“As a UNEP Ambassador, Gisele recognises that no issue is more relevant to the future of the global economy, the prosperity and well-being of the world’s poorest people, and the preservation of our planet, than sustainable energy. Her passion, credibility and commitment to energy access will draw significant attention to this pressing development issue and help to ensure that in two decades times, every women, man and child has access to the power to challenge work their way out of poverty,” said Margaret Gardner, Director at Practical Action.

Ugandan born British Soul singer Michael Kiwanuka was named the 2012 winner of the BBC ‘Sound of…’ competition.This is a competition that is held annual by BBC with an aim of finding the most promising new music talent.
The Sound of 2012 list was compiled using tips from 184 key UK-based music critics, broadcasters and bloggers.
Kiwanuka started out as a session guitarist, working with rapper Tinie Tempah‘s producer Labrinth, before pursuing an active solo singing career and signing to Communion label, set up by Mumford and Sons’ Ben Lovett.

BASKETMOUTH WEIGHS IN ON OCCUPY NIGERIA

Nigerian comedian Basketmouth recently posted his opinion on Facebook about the ongoing oil subsidy that is causing a rift between government and it’s subjects.
In the note, he says he was reluctant to “get involved with this whole subsidy drama because of some vague factors surrounding the whole idea and execution, but since i've been pushed to talk, here goes: Subsidy is not really the problem, the problems here happen to be the ones we have been facing before we got Independence (ELECTRICITY,WATER,ROADS, SECURITY, EDUCATION,FUNCTIONAL REFINERIES just to name a few)”.

He continued: “If the refineries were working, we wont be talking about exportation or importation of our own natural resources, if there was electricity, the consumption of fuel and diesel will be on zero %, because as it is, we spend more on our generators than we spend on cars daily.
"If the refineries were working and we had more, that is more employment, a better and stronger economy etc, if the educational system was in top form, youths wont be seeking admission in foreign schools, schooling abroad used to be luxury but now its a necessity.

“If the subsidy is removed today, how does that stop the excesses we spend on fuel in our generators, an average Nigerian spends more than N100,000.00 to have a 12hr power supply from a fuel generating system while we are supposed to be spending a maximum of N6,000 every month if the power supply was steady.We have a bag of problems,can the govt address them in the order of importance?!!!!
“In the western world, power outage for less than 2hrs is breaking news and makes headline all over the world, but in Nigeria random power outages for the past 51years is part of our culture and has become a tourist attraction.“Lets fight for our basic rights, lets come together and have one voice against the govt and bad leadership, we are the present and future of this great Nation, its time we get what is ours, its time we stand together as one and fight a good cause.
“Amongst many, ELECTRICITY is something we shouldn't be denied of in 2012, REFINERIES are structures every state in Nigeria should have, if not three at least one."

NAIJA CROONER NNEKA FOR KENYA IN FEBRUARY

Nigerian singer Nneka is set to perform in Nairobi courtesy of the Goethe Institute in February. While the date is not yet confirmed, the singer is booked to perform at the Zanzibar Sauti Za Busara on February 8-12.

Anyho, Nneka was born in Warri, Oil City in the Delta region of Nigeria at the height of its new found wealth in the mid 70s.
The daughter of a Nigerian father and a German mother, Nneka is a testament to the strength of talent that her success so far is based on word of mouth, on the quality of her albums and the intensity of her live performance.
She is not a big-label product, forced down people’s throats by marketing dollars.

Her audience now numbers hundreds of thousands across two continents, for Nneka now divides her time between homes in Lagos and Hamburg.
Those listeners are people who have tracked her down, because there will always be a demand for music that does more than just entertain, but touches something universal.

Controversial jazz player, Joseph Hellon is rebranding himself and shaking off last year’s Quincy Timberlake – Esther Arunga saga.
The jazz maestro opened 2012 with a new show that will showcase jazz in it’s purest raw form. Hellon together with former Mr Kenya Odada Okellow are now organizing a weekly jazz shows that are centred on music and fashion.
Dubbed Jazz and Clad, the weekly Monday shows will seek out “jazz enthusiasts who enjoy sophisticated music and also be involved by participating in the dress themes,” he said, adding, “These shows will build up to an international East African jazz festival that will serve a platter of Jazz melodies to a sophisticated society wearing something nice to listen to nice music. It is our object and ethos to do this.”

Kenyan singer Stella Mwangi a.k.a STL revealed to Hot Secretsthat she is “engaged” to someone who is “not in the music industry”.

The Go-Getter hitmaker who is based in Norway jetted intothe country mid last week for a series of “business meetings” and “musicrelated tour”.

STL remained mum about her fiancé. Spotting a gold ring withencrusted with a sizable shinny diamond, STL steered the conversation to hermusic and the reason she is in town.

The Lookie Lookie star just got back from Uganda where shewrote a song with Navio and Richie Rich which is “yet to be recorded” and shewill heading out to Tanzania after Christmas to “collabo with AY on the remixof a song I have recorded”, STL said.

The singer who is enjoying favourable airplay for her latestrelease Hula Hoop featuring Mohombi says 2012 is a year when she ups hertargets.

“I want 2012 to be the year I use the experience learnt from2011. I would like to have an African tour,” she said.

Two of the most prolific young international gospel artistewon’t be performing be in Kenya for the New Year gig organized by TwelveEntertainment.

Jamaican Omari Edwards and Tobago’s Positive – real nameJoel Murray – were expected in in Nairobi for a concert at KICC’s plenary hallon December 31 but due to security concerns, the gig was cancelled.

The 31-year-old Omari is known for his dynamic voice andpeculiar gifting has been paving many roads for him. His motivation comes fromhis love for people, especially youth. He wants to develop in youth a greaterappreciation for life as they cope with the day-to-day problems in society.

Familiar to reggae fans for his recent hits Help! and Why,Omari is creating waves in the music industry. He received three MegajamzAwards, including that for Lyricist of the Year 2008 for his song Why, producedby Kurt Riley.

As for Positive, every one of his singles has dominated thecharts on both Christian and secular stations throughout the Caribbean. In lessthan a year, this young artist has been dubbed The new voice of the Caribbean.

At 23 years, Positive is determined to stay true to hiscalling and sing songs of hope and encouragement drawn from his tragic liveexperiences. "In 2003 my only sister died from meningitis and in 2007 mymother died of cancer", said Positive. "Through all this I'veremained faithful to the ministry and have been able to find strength from Godthrough the music he gave me".

GROOVE PARTY CANCELLED FOR SECURITY REASONS

The New Year’s party set to take place at the KICC onDecember 31, has been canceled. In a press statement dated Wednesday December21, Mo Sound Entertainment, the organisers of Groove Party announced that theend year event has been cancelled due to “red flags” raised by the Kenya Police and “based on available securityintelligence”.

The statement read: “The preparations for Groove Party 2011were at a very advanced stage having received all the necessary clearance fromrelevant authorities.”

However, Anthony Kibuchi, the Nairobi PPO said,“Al-Shabaab has threatened to hijack the event and do destructive damage to theparticipants and the facility.”

The Groove Party team, also took the opportunity to wish allthe fans “a Blessed Christmas and a Groovy New Year,” and unreservedlyapologized for the inconvenience caused by the unforeseen cancellation.

Senegalese-American rapper and founder of Konvict Musiclabel has signed three Nigerian acts to his label.

Akon signed to his label, Tuface Idibia, Wizkid and theP-Square duo of Peter and Paul Okoye.

Gospel singer Jimmy Gait recently took his philanthropiccampaign of Make It Or Make It to the internally displaced families in KieniForest’s Huruma Village.

Jimmy together with Expansion International are planning to buildhouses for the IDPs but they are at a crossroad because, they do not have theland to build on. They currently live in semi permanent structures.

Late November, gospel singer Jimmi Gait and UK singer Mica Paris rolled up their sleeves and got down and dirty at the Kibera Slums.
The two were part of the Riziki Kenya and Kibera in Need initiative that saw them traverse the slum and take part in a feeding programme.Kibera In Need funds more than 200 Kibera children through school, runs a weekly feeding programme, has made small business loans and provided mattresses, vaccinations, medical support, outings, vocational training and much more.

Jimmi Gait told Hot Secrets, “I was touched by the appreciation and the expression of joy by the kids when they saw us there. American RNB artiste Donell Jones will be performing inNairobi’s National Park for the Tusker Lite Experience concert this Friday.

Born May 22, 1973 in Chicago, IL, Donell started singing atthe age of 8, wrote his first song at the age of 12 and at the age of 14 hereceived an electric guitar as a gift from his mother. With his roots in musicfirmly planted, Jones overcame the southside streets of Chicago’s gang life topursue his dream.

While at a music conference in Washington, DC in 1993, Donellcaught the attention of music producer Eddie F. At the time Jones was amember of a group. The group had high aspirations for their talentshowcase at the conference, however, no one showed up.

Determined to getnoticed, Jones and the group started singing for anyone who listened. Eddie F saw great potential in the group that day. Shortly after that meetingthe group was signed to Untouchables/LaFace and recorded a single but theirdream was never realized because the group disbanded.

Not willing to give up on the music business, Donell provedhis skills as a writer and producer. Donell wrote one of Usher’s firsttop ten hits, “Think of You.” He wrote and produced for several other artistsincluding 702, Silk, Brownstone, Madonna. In 1996, with LaFace’s long awaitedapproval, Jones released his debut album, My Heart. It included a cover ofStevie Wonders’ song; “Knocks Me Off My Feet,” that quickly gained Jones aloyal following.

But it wasn’t until his second album “Where I Wanna Be,”released in 1999 and certified platinum, that Donell was recognized as a trueforce in R&B. With a number one hit that featured TLC's Lisa"Left-Eye” Lopes, “U Know What’s Up” others began to see what LaFaceRecords already knew.

You are touring Europe right now, how is that like?

I have been to the UK for two weeks and its not bad. Forsome weird reason it felt no different from home apart from the good roads andtrains and fast Internet speeds.

What shows are lined up for you there?

I have had a couple of shows here in Germany, where I ambased. Recently, I performed in Augsburg, Gutersloh and I am currently gettingready to curtain raise for Awilo Longomba in his show here in Hamburg inDecember. I am still meeting new promoters in the field and I am sure I willhave more shows with time.

What is the last book you enjoyed reading…

To be honest, I’m not much of a book reader but the book Iwant to buy this year is The Power of a Praying Wife. I hear its nice and Ithink I’d love to read it.

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation will be hosting a uniqueWorld AIDS Day event, Shuga Talks, in which two simultaneous screenings of MTVStaying Alive drama Shuga will be held in Nairobi, Kenya and Washington, D.C.on December today.

Following the screenings, audiencemembers - those attending in person and watching from home - will have theopportunity to participate in a live video discussion via satellite, and engagewith other young people around the world using social media platforms, toaddress key HIV and AIDS issues highlighted in the show.

Hosted by BET entertainer Big Tigger (Rap City, 106 &Park) in Washington, D.C. and MTV Africa VJ Kule Ekirapa in Nairobi, viewers athome will have the chance to tune in to the debate that will be streamed liveat www.mtvshuga.com/shugatalks. In addition, testing centers will be present atboth screenings to encourage audience members to get tested.

Kenyandrama series CHANGES has returned tothe M-Net schedule this month and DStv audiences can tune in for season 3 everyMonday in a brand new 19:30 timeslot.

Oncemore the show uses a talented local cast and crew to tell the story of a groupof diverse characters living and working in Nairobi, trying hard to find theirown successes. MAKADEM TALKS SEUN KUTI, FANS AND LIFE

Ohangla musician Makadem who was recently on tour in Europespoke to Hot Secrets about opening for Seun Kuti, the son to the legendaryfounder of Afro Beat, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Makadem was the sole opening act for Seun on October 28 inCopenhagen, Denmark. Seun was backed by his band Egypt 80, which is theoriginal band that played with Fela.

How was your tour?
My tour began on October 20 and ended on November 19.

You curtain raised for Seun, how was that like?

Yes, I opened for Seun and it was quiet an experience. Theplace was one of the biggest venues in Copenhagen its known as Amager Bio butyou pronounce it as Ama Bio. I wasbacked by a bigger band due to my collaboration with other talented acts fromaround Europe in total it was a 10 man band.

It must a been an experience…

The crowd cheered wildly as we rocked for an hour and evenSeun Kuti said to me ‘Brother you good!’. We have plans to do more stufftogether in Paris, France next year as his manager was quiet impressed withme.”

Are you recording any collabos?
I am going to work on that very soon because I will be on tour in Europe againin spring that is February – March.

How is it like handling both Kenyan and international fans?
International fans – especially those from the west - are easy to work withthan in Kenya because they are ready for any great performance. However, musicin Kenya its largely about, who you are, whether you big, have a hit song orwho knows you… blah, blah, blah. I see that with Kenyans abroad as well. Mostof them still look at me and say ‘Who is he?’. Just because they know who theyknow according to Kenyan media, that is whom they consider as celebs. Period.

It is not all doom and gloom I’m glad the trend seems to bechanging at a fast rate. I believe, if I keep up with my work, in the next twoyears or so, I will be fine both home and away.

What is the last book you enjoyed reading?
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

A common misconception about me…
Some say I’m an Ohangla musician or even simply a Luo musician yet I performmusic for all ages, races, and continents.

My worst childhood fears were …
(Laughing) Imagine, I always feared getting flashed in a toilet! Seriously.

My ideal night out is…
Attending local live band shows with a small group of friends, having a fewdrinks -drinking lightly - and having meaty bites in between as we dance to thebeat!

If I were a politician I would…
I would work hard to unite, educate and economically empower all communities inKenya.

My childhood was full of ups, downs, and everything in between. I watched assome of the things I held close go away and I lacked all the privileges some ofyou had. What are your aspirations, passions with respect to your company?

I am a business gambler and an adventurer at heart, one wholoves to take risks, to discover and explore new worlds, and to travel theuntried path rather than the safe, reliable one. I am independent, freedomloving, and often very restless. I have a lifestyle that provides opportunitiesfor travel, movement, change, and meeting new people.

An incurable optimist, I have big dreams, aspirations andhope for the future and I am usually engaged in pursuing a far-off goal. What motivated you to do what you do?

When I grew up my dad always told me I need to leave alegacy and you can leave a legacy either through planting a tree, having achild or writing a book but I want to leave a legacy that will change peopleslives for the better and that’s by doing international events and raising thebar of international gospel events.

Where do you see yourself two years from now?

I see myself going global with Twelve Agency mostly in areas of advertising and events becausealready we have spread our tentacles in Africa…we are already building strongpartnership with like minded partners in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and SouthAfrica and in 2012 we heading to West Africa.

How many events have you done?
I have done quite a number thanks be to God. There’s the Chevelle Franklyn Xtreemeweekend/ Recharge Concert with Marvin Winans Jr, Sherwin Gardner and Damita Haddon,Love At The Dome that featured Stitchie, The Cece Winans Kenya tour, The Big Pictureevent that was headlined by Da Truth, Rapper flame who headlined the Capturedconcert and most recently the Unashamed Kenya concert featuring Lecrae and 116 crew.

Which was the best event ever?
I can say 116 was the best event cause we had lots of mediasupport especially you Hot Secrets, got some great supportive sponsors (StandardGroup, Naivas, Ghetto Radio, Mavuno, Spinrej DJ), and the attendance wasamazing just over 4000 people.

What are some of the major challenges you go through in Kenya whenorganising and promoting your events?

Malice and negativity from guys in the industry! Somethingstrange is that it is starting to get into the gospel industry. It is gettingto a point where people form hate cliques and start mudsling. There is also theissue of high taxes.

What keeps you awake at night?

Positioning myself asthe #2 guy at everything I do. All my businesses; everything that I do. Being#2 gives me a challenge: whoever thinks they're #1 I'm giving you fair warning,stay on your toes cause I'm right at your back!!! Don't sleep, don't party,don't go trickin'.

What is your advice for a young events organiser?

Do not give up, the journey won’t be so smooth there aretimes you will burn your fingers but the passion is what will drive you.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?

(Laughing) I won’t say that for now…..it keeps changing eachmonth.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Setting up Twelve Agency and being able to hire 5 people. Iam grateful for the team at Twelve they are so amazing.

What was the biggest gig that got away?

I think it was the Megafest Unplugged that plunged me to avalley as I was planning to bring to Kenya 7 international gospel actsbut 2 weeks to the event, we realized that the artiste’s plane tickets had beenbooked using stolen credit cards. After that event I was branded afraudster/conman especially with people in the church but during that time Imanaged to find new friends who embraced me and walked with me in the journey.

MIRIAM MAKEBA’S MAMA AFRICA SCREENED IN NAIROBI

Mama Africa is the biography of Miriam Makeba, South African singer and anti-apartheid activist, the voice and the hope of Africa.Makeba was an incredible person. She was the first black African musician who won international stardom and whose music - that influenced artists across the globe - was always anchored in her traditional South African roots, as was her ceaseless message against racism and poverty.

Makeba was forced into a life in exile, after exposing the harsh realities of apartheid for the first time internationally through her participation in the 1959 documentary “COME BACK AFRICA”. She sang for John F. Kennedy and Marlon Brando, performed with Harry Belafonte, Nina Simone and Dizzie Gillespie, was married to Hugh Masekela and also Stokely Carmichael.

Her life was tumultuous. She always stood for truth and justice. She fought for the oppressed most importantly for black Africans, as a campaigner against apartheid.She died after collapsing immediately after leaving the stage at a concert in the Southern Italian town of Castel Volturno in November 2008. Makeba was 76.

This documentary, directed by Mika Kaurismäki, traces her life and music through more than fifty years of performing. Using rare archive footage of her performances, interviews and intimate scenes filmed over the years, we are shown a unique person, a world icon. Friends and colleagues, some who knew her since she started performing in the dance halls of South Africa (remember “Pata Pata”), together with her grandchildren Zenzi Monique Lee and Nelson Lumumba Lee, allow us know the remarkable journey of Miriam Makeba, “Mama Africa”.

Some of the interviewed personalities include:-

Zenzile Monique Lee who is Makeba’s granddaughter. She was born in Manhattan, New York. Her mother Bongi Makeba Lee died in 1985. She grew up with her grandmother. Zenzi Lee sang as a backup vocalist for Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela. Her debut album “Daynights” was released the 26th of November 1999 in South Africa.Nelson Lumumba LeeLumumba Lee is Miriam Makeba’s grandson, and Zenzi Lee’s big brother. Lumumba Lee joined the Miriam Makeba Band on synthesizers and produced some of Miriam Makeba’s music.

Hugh Masekela, born on April 4th, 1939 in Witbank, SA, began singing and playing piano as a child. But at age 14 he began his career as a trumpeter. In the 60ies Miriam Makeba helped Hugh Masekela obtain admission to the Manhattan School of Music (NY). Masekela can be heard adding his trumpet, singing and arranging talents to some of the singer's very best records. In 1964 Makeba and Masekela married. Two years later, in 1966, they divorced and Masekela relocated to Los Angeles.

Angélique Kidjo is a Beninoise singer-songwriter and activist. Her music is influenced by her child-hood idol Miriam Makeba. Other musical influences include Afropop, Caribbean zouk, gospel, Congolese rumba, jazz and Latin styles. In 1989 Kidjo opened a Miriam Makeba concert and they became friends. In 2008 she won the Grammy Award for Best Con-temporary World Music Album. On Sept 2009, The Festival D'Ile De France in Paris asked Angélique to curate a tribute to Miriam Makeba.

Abigail Kubeka was discovered at the age of sixteen by Miriam Makeba, when she joined her female singing group, “The Skylarks” and understudied her in the acclaimed musical King Kong. Abigail has performed in every major country in Africa, Europe and Asia and is an acclaimed television, film and theatre actress.

Dorothy Masuku(a.k.a. Masuka) is a jazz singer who was born in Zimbabwe in 1935, then called Southern Rhodesia. Her family moved to South Africa when she was 12. By the time she was 19 she was touring in SA with singers she had admired as a girl. Masuku's music was popular in SA throughout the 50ies, but when her songs became more serious, the government began questioning her. Her song "Dr. Malan," was banned and in 1961 she sang a song for Patrice Lumumba which led to her exile. Being a friend of Miriam Makeba she wrote several of her songs and spent time with her in exile.

Joe Mogotsi was a band member of “The Manhattan Brothers” who have their origin in the early '30s. The group (consisting of four male vocalists) was one of the most influential vocal groups in the history of SA's music. During the late '40s and '50s, they appeared regularly on SA television and radio and influenced succeeding generations with their style of dress, speech, attitude, and lifestyle. In the early '50s, the Manhattan Brothers expanded with the addition of female vocalist Miriam Makeba who started her career and was part of the group for much of the ‘50s.

Leopoldo Fleming is a musician, composer, lyricist and arranger with a rich and multicolored palette of inspiration from his Latin-Afro-Indian roots being Puerto Rican. He accompanied Miriam Makeba during her time in the US as did the bassist Bill Salter who wrote most of her English songs. Both musicians played with Makeba among others at the Live at Bern’s Salonger, Stockholm, Sweden”-concert in ‘66.

Kathleen Neal CleaverFrom 1967 till 1987, was married to the Black Panther cofounder Eldridge Cleaver († 1.05. 1998). She was the first female member of the Black Panther Party’s decision-making body being the com-munications secretary. Today Professor Cleaver is working as a Senior Research Associate at the Yale Law School, and a Senior Lecturer in the African American Studies department at Yale University.

Lorraine Gordon is a jazz icon who has lived more than a few lives: downtown bohemian, uptown grande dame, music business pioneer, wife, lover, mother and finally – at a point when most women at her age were just settling into grandmotherhood – owner of the most famous jazz club in the world, the “Village Vanguard” in New York. This famous venue was where Miriam Makeba debuted in the USA.

Tell me a bit about the Wangari Maathai song?
The Wangari Maathai tribute is a song Mama Africa I did to celebrate an amazing woman,fighter and an amazing Kenyan. I had earlier written a song on environment andthe initial plan was to incorporate the late Prof. Wangari Maathai but we nevergot the chance to meet, so after the sad news that she had passed on, I decidedto do some changes on the chorus and sing about her and still talk about canceron the bridge.

We have heard the release, what is next on your musical releases?
I have been working on my debut album and will be coming out soon, we areworking on some few logistics and once that is done, then I will be giving youa chance to listen to NedokaH Music (My Music). She has graced TV screens across East Africa for the last five weeks and she has now become a familiar face to those following the current Guinness Football Challenge TV show. Flavia Tumusiime, Uganda's Capital FM AM-PM programme presenter is definitely spicing up the show. Her Juicy look and sweet voice as described by many of her fans has earned her lots of fans and admirers not just in her home country Uganda, but also currently in Kenya and Tanzania.

The 23 year old graduate from Makerere University is a well established TV & Radio personality in Uganda for the last 9 years having done her first stint in 2002 on WBS TV. Flavia is a common figure in Uganda's entertainment circles having hosted quite a number of entertainment events and live shows.

An actor, Model, Voice over artist, Radio/TV personality all rolled in one, Flavia has earned her place in Uganda's entertainment industry and she is a force to reckon with. She has been acting since 2007 and some of the films she has featured in include Kiwaani and Irreversible Regret among others.

Flavia joined the media industry at a tender age of 14 years when she was hosting a Teen's club programme on WBS TV in 2002 until 2006. In 2006 she was voted the face of Freedum Uganda for Nytil fashions, as one of the models who were participating in the show. In the same year, she joined Hot 100 FM as a Radio host and later moved to Capital FM Uganda where she is currently working. Among other platforms she has been involved in include, Host of K-files a fashion show featuring celebrities in 2010, Fair and lovely career fair in 2009 and MTN late chat campus activations for product placements.

As one of the young personalities in Uganda, she says its not all been easy 'The journey of my success has not been without hitches, I get many challenges along the way but i am determined to achieve what I set my mind to achieve" Her skills in Script writing, TV production, Public speaking and as a team player have played a great role in what she is today.

One of her greatest asset in her career is her voice, she says "God has blessed me with a good voice and am grateful I have been able to utilize it, I have done many voice over's for documentaries, films and Radio Ads.

In August 2011 she was nominated among five other African media personalities to represent Uganda as a Channel O VJ, whose brief among others is to give viewers a peek at the different cultures and spaces within Africa. Asked on how she feels about being on TV she said "TV is where I feel my best and the opportunity to represent my Country on Channel O is beyond word for me"

Roland Joffe (Oscar winning director of THE KILLING FIELDS, THE MISSION and CITY OF JOY) will be present at the screening of his latest movie 'There be Dragons' at Strathmore University on Monday, 21st November. Joffe will hold at press conference at Strathmore University at 5.00pm . It will be followed by a cocktail at 5.30pm, and the screening of the movie at 6.30pm.

About the movie
THERE BE DRAGONS is an historical adventure-action-drama, produced and directed by Roland Joffé (The Mission, The Killing Fields, City of Joy, Captivity), that evokes the youthful years of St. Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975), who inspired the foundation of Strathmore. St Josemaria insisted Strathmore would have to be multiracial at a time when education was segregated and multiracial institutions were forbidden by the colonial laws.

St Josemaria's insistence made it possible for the Kenyan Colonial Assembly to pass a special resolution allowing the beginning of what would become the first multiracial college in English speaking Africa. The movie which was released this year comes at a very fitting moment when Strathmore is marking its 50 anniversary.

In this film St Josemaria is played by Charlie Cox (Stardust). Robert (played by Dougray Scott) is a journalist who, on investigating the figure of the founder of Opus Dei to write an extensive report, discovers that his father, Manolo (played by Wes Bentley), with whom he has had no relationship for the past eight years, was a friend of Escrivá during his childhood. From that moment, the plot leads the journalist and with him the viewers, to discover unimaginable surprises that would change his life forever.

'There Be Dragons' features themes such as betrayal, love and hatred, forgiveness, friendship, and finding meaning in everyday life. Director Roland Joffé said 'There Be Dragons' is "a story about people trying to find meaning about their lives." Joffé, who was nominated for Academy Awards for his films The Mission and Killing Fields, describes himself as a wobbly agnostic.

He said he was "very interested in the idea of embarking on a piece of work that took religion seriously on its own terms and didn't play a game where one approached religion denying its validity." 'Reconciliation matters' is the main take away message that Joffé expects from the viewers. Life, he said, is an opportunity to love: "It's a choice, and in making that decision you become free. You do not become free when you hate. The weird thing is when you really love, you feel it like a breath of freedom, you think 'Oh my God, I've chosen this, and it's beautiful'."

He emphasized that Christianity is about love and the teaching of St. Josemaría "encourages a spiritual relationship with God in 'very simple things,' in cooking a meal, being with one's family, or even having a fight." Joffé states that this is "a film about what it means to be a saint in this day and age."

The New York Times, which called the movie a religious epic, reported that Joffé agreed to make the movie "after he saw a video of Escrivá answering a question from a Jewish girl who wanted to convert to Catholicism. Escrivá told her that she should not convert, because it would be disrespectful to her parents. 'I thought this was so open-minded,' Joffé said." At that point, Joffé signed on to direct, with the condition of writing a new screenplay from scratch and becoming a producer. Writer Elizabeth Lev says that the film portrays Josemaría Escrivá "as a new kind of hero in an era of hatred and fratricidal fights." This is especially relevant to the current situation in East Africa which has its share of wars and fratricidal fights.

AHADI KENYA FETED AT MSK FOR JIGGER ERADICATION

The Marketing Society of Kenya (MSK) feted Dr. Stanley KamauMaina as a marketing warrior for championing the anti-jigger campaign in Eastafrica. Kamau is the Founder and executive Director of Ahadi Kenya Trust. Theorganization was also awarded for being top in social marketing. Ahadi Kenyahas formed partnerships with over 62 corporate bodies in its fight againstjiggers. They were awarded during MSK gala night held at KWS on Friday evening.Others who were feted during the event included; Churchill, Angela Ombithe of Infotrack, Patricia Mbatia, Julie Gichuru among others.

This comes after the visit to the country by Big Brothercontestants to take part in the Anti Jigger Campaign by the NGO. The visiting housemates included Danny (Ethiopia), Wendall (Zimbabwe), Zeus (Botswana), Lomweand Felicia (Malawi), Mumba and Kim (Zambia), Bernadina (Namibia) andBhoke (Tanzania).

Accepting the award, Dr. Kamau dedicated the awards to allthe corporate bodies that have been supporting them. He said that marketing plays a very big role inraising awareness especially where no one is aware of what is happening. He finally made it into the Academy and was so overwhelmed with emotion during this year’s opening gala night that he took to his knees in gratitude. That determination paid off when he was crowned the winner on Sunday December 5, 2010.

The host of the UK Show How Clean is Your House? was overthe weekend in Nyeri to take part in a five-day charity bike ride to createawareness on the importance of early
diagnosis and support for women living with cancer.

Aggie Mackenzie is in the country for Women v Cancer BikeTour of Kenya in partnership with Faraja Cancer Support Centre.

Aggie was joined by 70 other bikers made up of women of allages and all cycling abilities from the UK and 7 from Kenyan who were flaggedoff by Safaricom Foundation Head of Corporate Responsibility Sanda Ojiambo onMonday, November 7.

The group will cycle 400 kilometers starting from Nyeri, throughthe Rift Valley, shores of Lake Victoria and finish off in Nairobi. The aim of the five-day bike ride challengeis to raise significant funds to help in the fight against breast, ovarian andcervical cancers.

How Clean is your House? was a hit the world over and theshow ran for six series, plus two produced in the US. The How Clean? format wassold to numerous countries around the world and the UK version currently airedin 16 of them – from Norway to Namibia!

CHRIS MBURU HONOURED IN UK FOR CHARITY

Kenyan philanthropist Chris Mburu known for his role in theGrammy nominated documentary A Small Act will on November 10 be honoured at theGO GO Gala an annual Hollywood fundraiser.

Each year, GO Campaign presents an honoree with the GivingOpportunity Award at the Gala in recognition of their work for childrenthroughout the developing world. This time round they will be honouring Chrisat the gala event to be held at The London Hotel in West Hollywood.

Chris who is now a human rights lawyer and has worked withorganisations like Amnesty International, Global Rights, and now the UnitedNations was the subject of a hit documentary, A Small Act that chronicled hissearch for his benefactor, Hilde Back, whose sponsorship allowed him to remainin school in Kenya.

Chris started a foundation in the name of his benefactor,continuing this chain of paying it forward in a remarkable way. The Hilde BackEducation Fund (HBEF) is a Kenyan charitable organization whose focus is thepromotion of access to education as a fundamental human right.

MENTALITY TALK SHOW TO AIR ON ZUKU TV

The first ever male talk show in Kenya, Mentality, is set to start airing exclusively on Zuku TV every Friday. The exciting and controversial show seeks to demonstrate the whole panoramaof male behavior by discussing topics relating to men, but affecting women.

Mentality features a regular panel of threemismatched popular men from various professions namely thespian Ian Mbugua, radiopresenter Edward Kwach and Pastor Simon Mbevi, alongside various female guestswho give women a voice on the show. The recording’s success encouraged the collapse of cultural performance barriers, and introduceLadysmith Black Mambazo and their compelling presentation of indigenous music to larger audiences aroundthe globe.

Joseph Shabalala, founder and leader of Ladysmith BlackMambazo, is an educator, composer, producer, bishop, board member for a numberof developmental institutions as well as an artist.

To date Ladysmith Black Mambazo was nominated thirteen (13)times for Grammy Awards.

From 2010 to 2011 LBM will be celebrating 50th Anniversary(1960-2010), together as one, without any slip or conflict and the leader the founder of the group celebrating 70years old (1940-2010), he formed this group at an age of 20 years.
